Explainer: Is Idgah Masjid built on Krishna Janmabhoomi? Petition approved, know what is this temple-mosque dispute

Case is going on in the court regarding Gyanvapi Masjid of Varanasi. Meanwhile, the Mathura District Court has approved the hearing of a petition regarding the Sri Krishna Janmabhoomi and Idgah Masjid dispute in Mathura. In the petition, there has been a demand to hand over the ownership of the land to the Hindu side, on which the Shahi Idgah Masjid has been built.

The Shahi Idgah Mosque is believed to have been built in the 17th century on the orders of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb by destroying the temple located there next to the Krishna Janmabhoomi.

In such a situation, let us know what is the dispute of Krishna Janmabhoomi-Idgah Masjid? Which petition has been filed in the court regarding this? What are the petitioners demanding?

Which order did the Mathura Court give?

The Mathura District and Sessions Court has accepted for hearing the petition for the title of the land of the Idgah Masjid built near Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi. The District Judge who approved the petition is Rajeev Bharti.

Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi Trust and other private parties have appealed in the petition that the ownership of the land should be handed over to them by removing the Idgah Masjid. The Idgah Mosque is built next to Shri Krishna Janmabhoomi, which is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna. The entire dispute is regarding the 13.37 acres of land, which the petitioners claim belongs to Lord Krishna.

The petition was first dismissed by the lower court in September 2020 and then a revision petition was filed in this case before the district judge. Now this civil case will be heard by the lower court.

Apart from looking at the revenue records, the court will also have to decide the validity of the 1968 agreement between the temple management authority—Shri Krishna Janmasthan Seva Sansthan and the Masjid Idgah Trust. In this agreement, the temple authority gave the disputed part of the land to the Idgah.

What are the cases related to the dispute so far?

At least a dozen cases have been filed in the local courts of Mathura regarding this dispute. A common demand among all these petitions is to remove the Shahi Idgah Masjid from the 13.37-acre complex. This mosque is located near Katra Keshav Dev Temple. It is believed that Lord Krishna was born in this temple complex.

The other appeals of the petitions include a demand for a survey of the Idgah Masjid like Gyanvapi Masjid in Varanasi and the right to worship there.

At the same time, the Allahabad High Court is also hearing a PIL filed by Advocate Mehak Maheshwari, seeking acquisition of the Shahi Idgah Masjid by the government. This PIL was initially dismissed due to non-appearance of counsel for the hearing, but later a bench of Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice Prakash Padia accepted this petition for hearing. The next hearing on this is likely to be held on July 25.

In a separate case, the Allahabad High Court on May 12 directed the Civil Judge (Senior Division) of Mathura to decide the cases on the Krishna Janmabhoomi issue within four months.

Justice Salil Kumar Rai was hearing a plea by Manish Yadav, who claimed himself to be an immediate relative of the deity. In his petition, Manish has sought a temporary ban on entry into the Shahi Idgah mosque premises.
