Investigation increased on the basis of chargesheet
The ED got this big success when it went ahead with the investigation on the basis of the charge sheet presented in the court after registering the case by the Vigilance team of Odisha. The Vigilance team of Odisha had registered a case of illegal mining against Patnaik in November 2009. In which it was alleged that during the years 1999 to 2009, Jitendra Nath Patnaik had done illegal mining, due to which the government suffered a total loss of Rs 130 crore. After investigating the case, the Odisha Vigilance team had also filed a charge sheet in 2013, on which the ED started its investigation by registering a case of money laundering.

Illegal mining for 30 years despite the expiry of the license
The Odisha Vigilance team had registered a case against a total of 15 people, including Jintendra Nath Patnaik, 13 years ago, out of which one of the accused has died. According to the FIR, the former MLA's father Bansidhar Patnaik had a mining license from a magnesium and iron mine in Odisha. Which was given to him in the year 1959 for 20 and 30 years. But in 1967, Jitendra Nath Patnaik's father Bansidhar Patnaik gave up the magnesium mining lease which was for 20 years but continued the iron mining lease. Before the lease expired, Jitendra Nath Patnaik applied for re-lease on behalf of his father, but then in the year 1995, his father Bansidhar died.
