Trouble started in UP at 5 am



In Ballia, the protest against the Agneepath scheme started at 5 am. Youths set fire to a train parked in Ballia Washingpit. Hundreds of youths first created a ruckus at the railway station, then broke the windows of many vehicles. The police have detained a miscreant. On Thursday, there were fierce demonstrations in 11 districts of UP. Youth vandalized buses in Agra, Aligarh. Youth raised slogans in Bulandshahr. The situation became so uncontrollable that the police had to lathi-charge. Youth protested in Meerut, Deoria, Sitapur as well as Shuklaganj of Unnao.


In Firozabad, the rowdy youths took to the streets from seven in the morning regarding Agneepath. On the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, 4 buses were vandalized and jammed. The police, who reached the spot, ran the rioters to open the jam somehow.


Government increased age limit

The central government has announced to increase the upper age limit from 21 years to 23 years for recruitment under the Agneepath scheme. However, this exemption will be applicable for this year only. According to the Defense Ministry, this decision has been taken due to no recruitment in the last two years. Earlier the age limit to become Agniveer was 17.5 years to 21 years earlier.


This decision was taken on Thursday amid the ongoing protests in many states of the country regarding the Agneepath scheme. These include many states including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Jharkhand.

The Central Government on June 14 announced the launch of the Agneepath Recruitment Scheme to recruit a large number of youth in the three branches of the Army – Army, Navy and Air Force. Agneepath Scheme is a nationwide short-term youth recruitment scheme for the Armed Forces. The youth recruited under this scheme will be called Agniveer. Agniveers will be deployed in various places including desert, mountain, land, sea or air.
