The climax of this season of Maharashtra's political drama has arrived. Eknath Shinde will become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. BJP will support him from outside. After this climax, there is only one question in everyone's mind. After all, why did BJP make Eknath Shinde the chief minister with the support of only 49 MLAs? In Bhaskar Explainer, we know how BJP has hit five targets with one arrow.
Target-1: To eliminate Shiv Sena through Eknath Shinde
In Maharashtra, both BJP and Shiv Sena are the competitors of Hindutva politics. Despite being together for 30 years, both know that the increase of one means the decline of the other. The figures also testify to this. Year after year the Shiv Sena shrunk and the BJP progressed equally fast.
In the last assembly, both Shiv Sena and BJP fought together. BJP became a big party and staked claim on the post of CM, but Shiv Sena understood that if the chair of CM again goes to Fadnavis, then no one will be able to stop BJP from spreading rapidly. In 2019, the major reason for the tussle between BJP and Uddhav was the CM's chair.
Because without eliminating Shiv Sena, BJP cannot move forward. Shiv Sena should end and its blame should not come on their head. That's why Shinde was made CM.
Nishan-2: BJP's defense from the backlash of the entire political drama
BJP wants to cover Shiv Sena with Thackeray's legacy, but it does not want that it should be blamed in front of the people of Maharashtra. This is the reason that despite playing the most important role in this rebellion, BJP itself did not come forward. On the other hand, Shinde kept calling himself the real Shiv Sena time and again. And finally BJP played the biggest bet by making Shiv Sainik Shinde the CM.
Along with this, a big reason behind making Shinde the CM is that BJP wants to do a test and trial right now. She wants to test how the people of Maharashtra react to the party snatching the chair and party of Uddhav Thackeray, son of Bal Thackeray. If it has the opposite effect in the election, then only Shinde and his faction will have to face the consequences. Being out of government, BJP will largely avoid it.
Target-3: Shiv Sena will remain, but Thackeray's legacy will be reduced
In Maharashtra, the legacy of Balasaheb Thackeray was a major obstacle for the BJP. Whose flag is currently being held by Uddhav Thackeray. Giving Shinde the supreme power is more likely to break the Shiv Sena's organization. The people of the organization would like to go to the camp of the Chief Minister. In this way the strength of Uddhav Thackeray will weaken further.
It has been repeatedly said from Shinde's rebel camp that Uddhav Thackeray has become close to NCP and Congress, forgetting Hindutva. Uddhav had also sensed Shinde's bet that, despite losing two-thirds of the party and a sure defeat in the Supreme Court, he changed the name of Aurangabad to Sambhaji Nagar and Osmanabad to Dharashiv. Actually, Uddhav did not want his hold on Hindutva politics to be weakened.
Target-4: snatching the source of Shiv Sena's strength from BMC for 37 years
Another reason for the BJP's bid to make Eknath Shinde the CM is the fight to capture Asia's richest municipal corporation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The main agenda of BJP is to snatch BMC from Shiv Sena. The BMC elections are due in September this year and in these, the BJP is eyeing to weaken the Shiv Sena's vote bank.
BJP has tried to dent Shiv Sena's vote bank by forming the government, supporting more than two-thirds of Shiv Sena's MLAs, including Eknath Shinde. This will weaken the Shiv Sena, which can benefit it in the BMC elections.
Actually, Shiv Sena's strength in Mumbai comes from its strong hold in BMC. Shiv Sena came to power in BMC in 1985 and since then it has been in control of BMC. In the 2017 elections, there was a fierce battle between Shiv Sena and BJP for the capture of BMC and out of 227 seats, Shiv Sena got 84 and BJP got 82 seats.
Target-5: Making Shinde the Chief Minister will increase BJP's interference in Marathas
As everyone knows, Bal Thackeray started his politics with Marathi Manush. That is, Maratha identity has been the core of his politics. It is a different matter that in the 90s, Thackeray also started Hindutva politics on the rise of Hindutva politics.
Here, BJP being a national party cannot do politics of Marathi identity. This will have a bad effect on him in the rest of the Hindi speaking belt. In such a situation, BJP needed another factor apart from Hindutva. To compensate for that, BJP has played bets on Shinde. Shinde is Maratha and BJP will definitely get the benefit of this.
