LIVE Crisis in Sri Lanka: Protesters allege – Police set fire to Prime Minister's house, forcibly switched off cameras

Protesters protesting the economic and political crisis in Sri Lanka set the prime minister's private house on fire yesterday. However, now the protesters say that the police have set the Prime Minister's house on fire. When the incident was being videotaped, the police forcibly switched off the cameras of the people.


On the other hand, the agitators occupied the residence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa on Saturday after 116 days. Gotabaya, absconding from Colombo after occupying the house, has decided to resign on July 13. Earlier, his brother Mahindra Rajapaksa had resigned from the post of Prime Minister in May. Protests against the Rajapaksa family in Sri Lanka began on March 15 this year.




After occupying the presidential residence, protesters surrounded the house of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe late last night, after which Wickremesinghe announced his resignation. Here, Sri Lanka's Chief Defense Staff Shavendra Silva has appealed to the protesters to cooperate with the soldiers to maintain peace.

President of Sri Lanka will be Speaker for a month

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe resigned from the post when the pressure increased after the people's occupation of Rashtrapati Bhavan. He gave this information on social media. Before the resignation, the PM had called an emergency meeting, in which the Speaker of the Assembly, Mahinda Yappa Abhaywardene, proposed to be made interim President. According to the Sri Lankan constitution - If the President resigns, the Speaker can become the interim President for one month.
