Infosys is in news these days due to a statement by Rishi Sunak, son-in-law of founder Narayana Murthy. In fact, Rishi Sunak praised Infosys and his father-in-law in one of his statements, after which everyone is eager to know the stories related to the Infosys Empire.
In today's Mega Empire, we will know about this IT company Infosys…
Murthy started the company by taking loan from his wife
The year was 1981. Narayana Murthy along with 6 of his friends decided to start his own company. All these 7 people were Engineers in Patni Computer Systems. Apart from Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani, SD Shibulal, Kris Gopalakrishnan, Ashok Arora, NS Raghavan and K Dinesh were in this company. To lay the foundation of Infosys, Murthy took a loan of Rs 10,000 from his wife Sudha Murthy. With this small amount, Murthy started a company in Pune and named it Infosys Consultants. The first office was a room in Murthy's house and its registered office was Raghavan's house. Nandan Nilekani has written in his book Imagining India that at that time family firms had tremendous control over the market. These were random and rarely profited a small shareholder. It was only after seeing all this that I got the inspiration to build a better company in India.
There was no computer for the first two years, in 1989 Infosys was closed and survived.
The special thing is that this IT company did not even have a computer in the first two years. In 1983, Murthy bought the first computer. The model of this computer was Data General 32-bit MV8000. The computer problem was solved, but there was another problem in the way of Infosys becoming a successful IT company. The year was 1989, that is, 6 years after getting the first computer, the company came on the verge of closure. Ashok Arora, one of the co-founders of the company left the company only after 8 years of its inception. Also, Infosys' agreement with American partner Kurt Salmon Associates did not prove fruitful. To get the company out of this problem, Narayan Murthy then told his colleagues working in the company - if you all want to go too, then go. I will fight here till the end. After this no partner left the company and then from 1989 onwards the company never looked back.
First Indian IT company to be listed on Nasdaq
By 1999, 6 years after entering the stock market in 1993, the revenue of Infosys had reached $100 million. In the same year, the company became the first IT company in India to be listed on Nasdaq. Nasdaq is an American stock market. According to reports, Nasdaq is the second largest stock exchange in the world. And Infosys was also included in the same Nasdaq's 20 largest market cap companies in 1999.
Today 3 lakh employees, world's largest employee training center
The empire of Infosys, which started 41 years ago, has become very big. The company has 2.92 lakh employees. It has a revenue of around Rs 1 lakh crore and a market cap of around Rs 8 lakh crore. Infosys is today the second largest IT company in India after TCS. Not only this, Infosys has also set up a training center spread over 370 acres in Mysore for the training of its young employees. It is believed to be the largest training center in the world.
Narayan-Sudha's love story is no less than a film story
Narayan Murthy and Sudha Murthy
Narayan Murthy and Sudha Murthy
Sudha and Narayan's love story started with the Tata Engineering & Locomotive Company based in Pune. Both worked together here. The two became friends through common friend Prasanna. When it came to propose, Murthy told Sudha, "My height is 5 feet 4 inches. I come from middle class. I can never become rich in my life. You are beautiful, smart. Whatever you want. She can have it, but will you marry me?" Hearing this, Sudha asked for some time to reply. Eventually both got married on 10 February 1978.
Before Infosys, Murthy had formed the Softronics company
This marriage also opened the way for the establishment of Infosys. In an event, a boy asked Sudha and Narayan Murthy - 'How did you take the risk of leaving the job and starting a company like Infosys?' To this Sudha Murthy laughed and replied - 'Because then they had a working wife, so they needed money. There was no problem'. In fact, after marriage, Narayana Murthy left his job at Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company. He started his own startup called Softronics. But Softronics failed miserably and after that Narayan Murthy had to work in Patni Computer Systems.
