The author involved in the freedom struggle wrote the original story of Ponniyin Selvan

Mani Ratnam's film is based on freedom fighter R Krishnamurthy's 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. The book Ponniyin Selvan is based on the story of Emperor Rajaraja I of the Chola dynasty. Krishnamurti used to write under the name Kalki. His story appeared as a weekly series in the Tamil magazine Kalki during 1950–1954.

In 1955, these stories were published in five volumes under the name Ponniyin Selvan, a novel of more than 2200 pages. The book Ponniyin Selvan written by Kalki is not entirely based on historical facts, but many historians say that Kalki has included many accurate historical events in his story.

It is highly praised for describing the culture and heritage of the time through a story woven around the Chola Empire.
