LIVEMallikarjun Kharge new Congress President: defeated Shashi Tharoor by 6825 votes; Rahul said - now my role will also be decided by Kharge ji

The Congress party has got its first non-Gandhi president after 24 years. Mallikarjun Kharge defeated Shashi Tharoor by 6825 votes. Kharge got 7897 votes, while Tharoor could get only 1072 votes. 416 votes were rejected.

Soon after the results, Shashi Tharoor congratulated Kharge and thanked those who supported him. Only then did he reach Kharge's residence in Delhi to meet him. However, in the midst of the elections, his Chief Election Agent Salman Soz had alleged rigging in voting.

On this, Rahul Gandhi also gave a statement in the press conference. Said- The issues have been placed before Madhusudan Mistry in the Congress Election Committee and he will take a decision. Rahul had spoken of Kharge's victory in the middle of the counting of votes. When he was asked about his role in the party, he said- Ask Khargeji. Will decide now.

Kharge is the 65th President of Congress, the second Dalit in this post

With the victory in this election, Kharge has become the 65th leader to become the Congress President. He is the second Dalit leader to become the Congress President. Babu Jagjivan Ram was the first Dalit leader to become the Congress President. After independence, the leadership of the party remained with the Gandhi family for 42 out of 75 years. At the same time, for 33 years, the reins of the party president remained with leaders other than the Gandhi family.

Mallikarjun Kharge's entry as a contender for the post of Congress President was the last, but only after that he became the front runner.

Tharoor camp had alleged wrongdoings

During the counting of votes, Tharoor's chief election campaigner Salman Soz had alleged irregularities before, during and after voting in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Telangana. Soj had said that he has informed the party's election in-charge Madhusudan Mistry about this.

Rahul said - Congress is the only party where elections are held

Rahul Gandhi, who reached Andhra Pradesh in Bharat Jodo Yatra, said, "Congress is the only party in which elections are held and it has its own election commission. I worked with Madhusudan Mistry, chairman of the Congress Election Committee. He is a very articulate speaker. All the issues have been brought to his notice and he will take action. Everyone asks about elections in Congress. I am proud of Congress, in which open and transparent elections are being held. Why does no one take interest in elections within other parties, be it the BJP or other regional parties?'
