Removed Maharaja Ranjit's clothes for falling in love with a Muslim-girl: 100 lashes, former Home Minister had to clean shoes; Story of Shri Akal Takht

Year 1994, place Shri Akal Takht Sahib of Amritsar. Buta Singh, who was a powerful Home Minister in the Rajiv Gandhi government, was washing dishes and cleaning shoes with a placard of apology hanging around his neck.

He was punished by Shri Akal Takht, the biggest religious body of Sikhs for doing so. The same Shri Akal Takht who sentenced Maharaja Ranjit Singh to 100 lashes for falling in love with a Muslim girl. Where former President Giani Zail Singh had to appear.

It was founded by the sixth Guru Hargobind Sahib of the Sikhs. It is the most important religious center of Sikhs. Major decisions related to Sikhs are taken from here.

To know the story of the same Shri Akal Takht in the Panth series, I reached the Golden Temple in Amritsar, about 450 km from Delhi.

First read this story….

It is about that time, when the heart of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the ruler of Punjab fell on a 13-year-old dancing girl. The name of that girl was Mohran. The Maharaja wanted to keep her as his girlfriend, but she did not agree to it. Mohran said to the Maharaja, 'I am a Muslim, cannot live as a girlfriend. You can marry me if you want.'

Ranjit Singh agreed to marry. Meanwhile Mohran's father put a condition. He said that we have a practice here. Whoever happens to be the son-in-law, has to light the stove in his father-in-law's house.

Mohran's father felt that the Maharaja would not be ready for this, but Ranjit Singh accepted the condition of his future father-in-law without batting an eyelid.

Shri Akal Takht, the religious organization of Sikhs, expressed displeasure over this decision of Maharaj. The Maharaja was ordered to appear before Shri Akal Takht. Ranjit Singh did not appear for the first time.

After this, Akali Phula Singh, the Jathedar of the Akal Takht at that time, ordered that no Sikh would salute the Maharaja, nor would his offerings be accepted in the Golden Temple. People stopped saluting the Maharaja. The prasad offered by him also stopped being accepted.

Eventually Ranjit Singh appeared in Shri Akal Takht. Ranjit Singh said that he had made a mistake. He apologizes for this. Whatever punishment is given to them, they will accept it. Ranjit Singh was sentenced to 100 lashes. For this, his shirt was removed and tied to a tamarind tree.
