Two rocks of Shaligram weighing 40 tonnes from Janakpur in Nepal reached Ayodhya on Wednesday night after a journey of 7 days. Grand idols of Lord Rama and Mother Sita will be made from these rocks. It is believed that these idols will be installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the grand Ram temple built in Ayodhya.

Scientific recognition: Fossil stones made 60 million years ago
In the language of science, Shaligram is a black colored ammonoid shell fossils of the Devonian-Cretaceous period. The Devonian-Cretaceous Period was 40 to 66 million years ago. This was the period when there was sea on 85% of the earth.
The word fossil is made up of two words, 'jiva' and 'ashma'. Ashma means stone. Thus, the meaning of fossil is that organism which became a stone. In English fossil is called Fossil.
Fossils are made of animal and plant remains buried deep in the earth's surface for millions of years. The remains of organisms gradually get buried under the sediments, due to which oxygen is not available to them. Due to the cover of sediment, neither oxidation nor decomposition of organic remains takes place. Due to this, these fossils turn into strong and hard rock.
This stone has been used in the sculpture of ancient times. Shaligram stones are very strong. That's why the craftsman carve out the smallest shape. The dusky idol of Lord Rama in Ayodhya is built on a similar rock.
The fossils are considered sacred by Hindus because Madhvacharya received them from Ashtamurti. Madhavacharya is also known as Vyasadeva. It is like the symbol of Vishnu i.e. conch. Shaligrams are found in different forms. Some are oval and some have a hole. In this stone, marks like conch, chakra, mace or lotus are made.
