The judges of the Supreme Court got angry over the listing of a petition. Justice DY Chandrachud even said that I recently read a news article which said that the Supreme Court is delaying the hearing of the matter. Give us a break too! How much can you target the judges? It also has a limit.
In fact, on Thursday, a petition highlighting the violence against the Christian community came before the bench. The lawyer has filed an appeal for urgent hearing. Justice DY Chandrachud reacted to this.
Hearing was postponed due to Corona
The matter was to be heard on July 11, later it was listed on July 15, but even then it could not be heard. On this, Justice Chandrachud said – I had corona, so this matter could not be listed. But who is publishing such news? The bench also included Justice Suryakant. However, later listing the matter for hearing, the bench said, "Okay, take it in the list or else some other news will be published."
Case of violence against members of Christian community
A petition was filed in the Supreme Court in April, seeking directions to stop violence and mob lynchings against members of the Christian community in several states across the country.
The petition was filed by Senior Advocate Dr. Colin Gonsalves, Archbishop of Bangalore Catholic Church, Dr. Peter Machado on behalf of National Solidarity Forum, The Evangelical Fellowship of India. It said that on an average 45 to 50 violent attacks against Christian institutions and priests take place across the country every month.
When it was not heard in June and July, it was reported in the media that the Supreme Court was delaying the hearing of the anti-Christian violence petition. Seeing this news, Justice Chandrachud reprimanded the lawyer.
Supreme Court has already given directions 4 years ago
In 2018, the Supreme Court had issued several guidelines for the Center and the states. These included fast-track trials, compensation to victims, punishment and disciplinary action against officials for laxity in enforcing the law. The court had said that crimes like hate crime, cow protection and incidents of lynching should be put to an end at the earliest.
