Why planes are becoming flying coffins in Nepal: 28 crashes in 30 years, know how old planes and mountains became a challenge for pilots

Yeti Airlines ATR 72-500 aircraft carrying 72 passengers crashed in Nepal on Sunday. After this accident, the discussion has started once again on the risk of flights in Nepal. This is the 28th plane crash in Nepal in the last 30 years.

Experts say that inhospitable mountainous terrain, inclement weather, old aircraft and inexperienced pilots make Nepal one of the most dangerous countries to fly to. According to a 2019 safety report by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, Nepal's mountains pose a 'big challenge' to pilots.

In such a situation, today in Bhaskar Explainer, we will know for what reasons Nepal is making a flying coffin for the planes?

The plane that crashed was of a 42-year-old model.

The aircraft ATR 72-500 that crashed in Nepal is part of the aircraft series. The 72 in the name of this aircraft tells its passenger capacity. The first aircraft of this model was built in 1981. After this, this aircraft was included in about 200 airlines of more than 100 countries. The aircraft of this model has been made jointly by the French company Airbus and the Italian aviation company Leonardo. The company also manufactures cargo and corporate aircraft.

According to the report, the pilot had sought permission for landing twice. Although permission was granted, the plane crashed shortly before landing.

Why is it so difficult and dangerous to fly in Nepal?

There are many reasons why flying in Nepal is difficult and dangerous. For example, Nepal's natural structure i.e. mountains, poor regulation i.e. poor regulation and lack of new aircraft make Nepal the most dangerous country for flying aircraft. Let's understand them in five points...

1. Difficulty in taking turns by planes due to narrow valleys

According to the 2019 Safety Report of the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, the dangerous geographical location of the country is also a big challenge for the pilots. About 30 million people live in Nepal. Eight of the world's 14 highest mountains, including Mount Everest, are located here. According to the report, Nepal's only international airport is located in a narrow valley 1,338 meters above sea level, due to which the planes get very tight turning space.

The airport of Lukla city, located in the northeast of Nepal, is one of the most dangerous airports in the world. This airport is also called the gateway to Everest. The runway of the airport is made by cutting a rock between the mountains. At one end of the runway of Lukla airport, there is a giant mountain and a ditch at the other end. In such a situation, only ultra trained pilots are allowed to take off and land at this airport. Even a small mistake can kill all the passengers on the plane.
